email client not properly installed

Hello,

On a few occasions recently , when clicking on a link to 'send us an email'
(eg on a hotel website) I have got a message 'email client not properly
installed' !

As far as I am aware my email is working fine.

What is the problem, and how do I solve it .

Is the problem mine or theirs ?

What will be on their website is a link like mailto://
and it's the mailto part that tells your browser to open the mail client
you have set as default.

If one site "Always" fails then it could well be a site problem, but if
this problem varies day to day and a site sometimes works and sometimes
not then the problem is more likely some glitch with your browser and
it's association with your email client. Could be a conflict with your
anti virus too.

So I'm guessing that your problem is with several sites but not all of
the time and kind of at random. Tell us what anti virus and how it's set
up. Usually setting AV software to scan email is what upsets things.
Also mention if using Internet Explorer and / or anything else you have
installed, eg Opera, Firefox etc.

Windows mail or Windows Live Mail.

You forgot to tell us how you read your email. I suspect that you use a
web-based email like Gmail or Yahoo or your ISP's webmail. The link you
click on is a mailto: link that will call your computer-based default email
client (Outlook Express, Windows Mail in Vista, Thunderbird, etc.). It
doesn't work with web-based email because there is no locally installed
program to call. If my Crystal Ball(tm) was correct, then just hold your
cursor over the mailto link and you'll see the email address of the person
to whom you want to write. Make a note of it and then go to your web-based
email, compose an email, and manually enter the recipient's email address.

If my Crystal Ball(tm) was cloudy, provide the missing details.

No, you don't. Outlook Express does not come with Vista. Perhaps you
mean Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail? You are posting with Microsoft
Windows Mail so it's probably safe to say that's what you use for email.

Outlook Express has been replaced with Windows Mail in Vista.
Do you have it configured to send and receive email correctly?
If so, make sure that it is the default email program.
Go to "Start" - "Default Programs" - "Set your default programs".
highlight "Windows Mail", then click on "Choose defaults for this
program".
click on "Select all" to make sure the MAILTO is selected
click on "Save"

Outlook Express doesn't come with Vista. Windows Mail does. Is that what
you're using?

Since you're using an email client (not web-based email), mailto: links
should work. Make sure your preferred email client is set as Default in
Control Panel>Default Programs.

Yes, apologies, it is 'Windows mail' not Outlook Express

I have followed the instructions from yourself & Dave, ie I've set all
defaults.

I've not yet tried to email using the mailto: links, will let you know how I
get on!

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select Windows Mail
Click OK

Then, follow these steps:

Click Set your default programs
Select your mail client from the list
Click Set this program as default
Click OK
