Email will only open if I have a browser already open!

when I log into msn messenger it pops up and says I have email. However if
I don't already have a browser open it wont' open anything. But say I have
a browser open and set at google for example it'll work. it'll open up a
new browser just like it's suppose to. NO unistalling won't work. I've
tried everything I can think of. I run xp home. any info?
