I just installed the latest version of Opera on my Vista laptop and when I try
to send an email, I get a message error in something called an 'error console'
that reads:

Error Console

Mail and Chat
<my email address>
Internal Error [550 5.7.1 Authentication Required]

The laptop came loaded with reinstalled software including McAfee which I
uninstalled as it would not let me send email. I thought be unstalling it, I
would then be able to send email...I can receive...just not send.

Any advice appreciated. Sheesh....I'm starting to hate Vista....

Don't know Opera but find and check your server settings. You should
have an option for the SMTP server that allows you to set up
authentication with the sending server you are using seems to want, name
and password usually, this is not necessarily the same as the one you
use to read email.

Also you might have the server address wrong, example if your email
address is your home SMTP server is probably something
like mail.example.com but if you then go to work and their internet is a
different supplier you need to use their SMTP server which could be
anything. In other words an SMTP that does not require name / PW
credential "Often" relies on the network you are connecting from.

When Opera installed I took the default setting for outgoing authentication with
was 'none'...had the right outgoing server...just no authentication. I just
changed it from 'none' to 'Autologin'...added user name and pass and
voila....'the email, she is working now'.

thanks for the headsup
