I had my computer worked on and they reconfigured everything, supposedly
putting everything back as it originally was. Since then, I can not download
email except when I shut down Windows Mail, leave it shut down for a while
and then reopen it. When I hit send/receive while it is open, I get a
message that an error has occurred and to check the error box but nothing is
listed in the box. It is blank. I have a bellsouth.net address. I
contacted AT&T and they gave me new settings to try but that was no help.
Any suggestions or support would be appreciated. BTW, I have AVG security.

First uninstall your AVG antivirus, reboot, then try Windows Mail again.
If Windows Mail then starts working correctly, you have found the culprit.

Your AVG antivirus was probably installed with its default install option,
which installs an email scanning module. Just disabling its email scanning
is not a sufficient remedy. After uninstalling AVG, you can reinstall, but
select 'custom' install, which then allows you to unselect installing its
troublesome email scanning module. Even better, replace it with the free
Microsoft security program:

I did an uninstall on the AVG, shut my computer down and restarted, opened
Windows Mail and still have the same error status when I hit "send and
receive." Any other suggestions? Thank you.

Make sure your settings agree with the ones given here:

Prior to installing AVG antivirus, did your computer have either Norton
or McAfee antivirus installed? Those often comes as free trials with new
computers. They require a special uninstall utility in order to remove
their bad effects:

Norton:

McAfee:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

If none of this helps, I suggest upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

http://download.live.com/wlmail
It will automatically import all your Windows Mail data.

Okay, after nothing else worked, I updated to Windows Live Mail. Now I have
two questions...how do I uninstall or get rid of Windows Mail and can I
create a desktop shortcut to Windows Live Mail. Thank you so much for your
suggestions. You have been very helpful.

Glad to hear Windows Live Mail is working for you. Incidentally, a new
beta version will be released tomorrow.

Windows Mail can't be uninstalled because it is part of Vista. You *can*
disable it:
Open the Default Programs applet, then click on "Set program
access and computer defaults." Expand the Custom selection, and
to the right of "Windows Mail" uncheck the box for "Enable access to
this program." On the same screen select "Windows Live Mail ", then
click OK.

The procedure for creating a desktop shortcut is the same for any Windows
program. Click the Start orb, All Programs, scroll down to Windows Live,
click it, then right-click on Windows Live Mail. Select Send To, Desktop.
