email synch across multiple computers

Cox Cable is internet provider. I loaded Windows Live mail on one computer
with XP and on another computer with Vista. I can send and receive emails
from both of our email accounts on both computers. But when I send it from
one computer, it does not show up as sent mail on the other. If I receive
email on one, read it, and delete it, it still shows up in my inbox on the
other computer. Is there something I need to do to synchronize my email
accounts across both computers?

If you set the email client to leave a copy on the server, the incoming
email will show up in all inboxes when you retrieve mail.
Depending on the ISPs settings, outgoing mail may not be saved on the
server.
It will be in 'sent mail' on the machine it was sent from, but is usually
not saved to sent items by the ISP unless you are using HTTP (internet based
mail read through the browser) mail.

Right-click on the account name in the left-hand Folder pane and select
Properties. Under Delivery on the Advanced tab, select "Leave a copy of
messages on server." You may want to select the last box as well, so you can
weed out messages there's no need to keep.

The messages coming in are stored on the server and probably downloaded
automatically by your two email clients so deleting an incoming message
on one machine won't delete it on the other if it has already been
fetched from the server because with normal settings it has already been
stored on the local machine. If you happen to get to the server first
then it won't be there for the second machine to fetch. For sent items
the situation is reversed, sent mail is stored by your client on it's
local machine and not usually at all on the server, at least not where
you can access it.

You might call Cox tech support and ask if they can provide
synchronizable accounts - it is not impossible but they may be part of
some business package you'd have to pay extra for.

You could try bcc the message to yourself when you send it, then it will
sit on the server as an incoming message which both machines can get. If
you play with message rules you might be able to do this in a tidy manner.

thanks. If I understand this correctly, "leave a copy on the server" command
will still delete emails once they are deleted from one computer, right?

If you're using POP3 and SMTP with a local e-mail client, it's not
possible - SMTP sending does not put a copy of the message in a server
folder, it only goes in the local Sent folder on your local computer.

If you use the full web interfac to receive, send, and file your messages,
you will see that same view on any computer when you access that web site.

To get this benefit with a mail client and still use Cox's mail system, look
into using IMAP. It's another mail protocol, like POP3, but mirrors folders
on your computer with the ones on the server. Any changes on one system will
mirror through to the server and onto any other computers.

IMAP (sometimes called IMAP4) is the only way to do this without using a
professional client-server mail system like MS Exchange/Outlook, Lotus
Domino/Notes, or Novell GroupWise.
