I'm about to take delivery of a powerful machine pre-loaded with Vista.

Big problem!!!

I have a huge number of hiatotical emails on my current XP machine, Will it
be possible to transfer all of this to th Vista machine - as far as I know?
Vista uses a totally different database and structure, God help me if I
cannot !!!!

Possibly a good idea to tell us what EMAIL CLIENT you used on XP and what
EMAIL CLIENT you plan to use on Vista? (This is nothing to do with Operating
systems BTW...)

Which application are these e-mails in?

If they're in Outlook just copy the PST file to the new machine, and tell
Outlook to look at that. If you're using Outlook with Exchange server the
e-mails will just get sent to the new machine automatically.

If you're using Outlook Express and need to move to Windows Mail, the
'Windows Easy Transfer' program that comes with Windows Vista can migrate
your e-mail.

Which is NOT advisable to use if the OP is using Outlook. (Which he didn't
tell us)

If you have access/account on a IMAP server, you can move/copy your messages
up to that server, then on Vista copy them down or use them off the IMAP
server.

I too keep a lot of mail. But always keep it on a IMAP server and backup
the IMAP files every so often. IMAP is really good if you say have a
desktop and a laptop and don't want the hassle of worrying about which
machine the mail is on. As with IMAP, it is on the IMAP server.

Otherwise, explore Export and Import under the File menu.

Depends. if the OP is using Outlook, (and he didn't think to tell us what he
IS using) then import/export is a big NO NO.

Yes, and MS is WRONG! If you ask ANY Outlook MVP or anyone else on the
Outlook groups, importing and exporting data from one Outlook to another can
easily cause all sorts of problems.

(Courtesy of Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook])

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost
PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

Yes, I tried export/import some many versions ago, and it didn't work well.
So have used IMAP for may mail ever since. But since I never tested
export/import in many years, don't know what they have or have not fixed. I
know the IMAP solution works great.
