Emoticons dont work for me

I have a problem with my emoticons for a couple days now. When I use them, I
see the keyshortcut, but the person I talk to can see the emoticon I use. Why
is that? Could it be that a program is blocking something?

~ Thanks for the help!

Greetings Hannah,

Have you installed any third-party Messenger patches or utilities? If so, you may want to
uninstall them and return to a vanilla Messenger install.

Many people are having this problem, and they aren't using third party add
ons. It occurs because the migration of user content from older versions to
8.1 wasn't done correctly. People are losing their display pictures as well.

Supposedly microsoft is working on a fix for all of us who have lost our
custom emoticons and display pictures, but I haven't seen anything posted
from them in several weeks, doesn't seem to me that they care about it. I
even offered to provide them detailed information about why it was happening
and guidelines to fix this flaw, but they didn't bother to reply to my post
from September.

Hi Hannah,

Make sure "Show emoticons" and "Show custom emoticons" are ticked in Tools
> Options > Messages

Hello Bozz,

If you read what Hannah wrote you will see that this is not about loosing
custom content. She sees shortcuts where others do see her emoticon (so the
emoticons are still there).

As for the loss of content, for the emoticons I can say that this is caused
by emoticons not being named (if I remember correctly, it's been ages since
I upgraded), so if one makes sure all their custom emoticons have names they
will be migrated fine. I already posted a way to get the "lost" custom
emoticons back some time ago (you must have missed it somehow) but I'll post
it here for you again Bozz:

1) Make a totally independent temporary folder (eg: C:\myemoticons)
2) Copy every .DAT, .DT2, from
"\Documents and Settings\<windows account name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<ID number>\"
and
"%user profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<.NET
passport>\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons"
to that temporary folder
3) Remove both messenger directories
4) Go to your temporary folder with all the copied files and rename every
single file to .PNG
5) remove duplicates images if you have some (check with an image viewer)
6) start Windows Live Messenger and start adding the icons in the proper way
by going to Tools > Emoticons > Create... > Find Image
7) remove your temporary folder (optional)

Dear Sunshine,

By reading and comprehending my original reply, you'll note I did recognize
the problem, Sunshine. That's what happens when your custom emoticons are
lost. When you type out the old keycode, no emoticon will be displayed nor
sent to the friend on the other end. And you cannot reload the emoticon back
either as messenger will claim that keycode is already in use.

Don't worry Sunshine, all of my custom emoticons were named. Your method is
gist of my solution, but it's a brute force hack to address the failure of
correctly migrating content to 8.1. Also this method won't restore the
content to
the state it was in previous versions. I have tested this method before to
recover lost display pictures, unfortunately they still are out of the order
they were listed in 8.0, which is a major problem for those of us with a
large number of display pictures.

Actually, Sunshine, a proper migration will restore the display pictures in
the EXACT order they were in 8.0, and likewise with the custom emoticons.
I'm waiting on
microsoft to come out with a tool that will migrate IN ITS ORIGINAL ORDER
the content store which was improperly left in

\Documents and Settings\<windows account name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\MSN Messenger\<ID number>\

to here

%user profile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<.NET
passport>\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons

I can't see my custom icons since moving to a new PC (running McAfee btw?)
and when I try to copy others it only offers select all - other options are
greyed out? Do you know if this problem is being treated and when a new
release might be available?
