Emoticons not working

Recently, when I use an emoticon in a conversation window, it does not get displayed
graphically, only with letters/symbols, e.g., (K) for the "kiss" emoticon.
I downloaded the WLM backup program and installed it, but it didn't help, even after
restoring the emoticons.
Any suggestions ?'
