Hi Hal-

Try running SFC. Or you can try these:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...recyclebin.reg

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...recyclebin.reg

While they were written for XP, they should work fine for Vista and they
aren't going to hurt you.

***SFC as a Remedy***:

SFC or System File Checker is a bit like the spare tire in your car or a
backup battery I suppose. In Vista of course, they have changed it somewhat
and come up with a new name--Redmond stands for name it something different
twice a year and now it's part of WRP or Windows Resource Protection. It
scans protected resources including thousands of files, libraries, critical
folders, and essential registry keys, and it replaces those that are
corrupted with intact ones. It fixes a lot of problems in Windows XP, OE,
Windows Vista, Win Mail, IE6, and on Vista or if it is installed on XP, IE7.
It protects these things from changes by any source including
administrators, by keeping a spare of most of them.

How to Run SFC:

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

Good luck,

CH

Hal--

Here's the context on SFC. It's not new in Vista, although it is improved
in Vista. It has actually been around in some form since Windows 98
(skipped in ME however). SFC is a kind of scanner of "spare tires" in that
Windows stores a spare of thousands of files (not all of them) and in Vista
registry keys, and .dlls so that if they get corrupted in the rough and
tumble of software on your box, System File Checker or Windows File
Protection as it's called can scan for corrupt files, and substitute intact
ones from its storage space. In XP it was stored in \Windows System
32\DLLCache, but in Vista things have been setup a bit differently.

An SFC scan virtually has no downside, and it can fix broken components of
Windows, IE,Win Mail and is always worth reaching for when you have a
problem that can't be fixed quickly by another method.

It takes a few minutes, and has no risk.

As to new "tools in Vista" Hal, there are a lot of new tools and features,
and one of the best ways to get a feel for them is to get a book like Vista
the Missing Manual, Vista Secrets, or Ed Bott's MSFT Press book on Vista.
Many of Kelly's XP tweaks work in Vista and they are at
www.kellys-korner-xp.com/

There are tons of websites that orient you to Vista features and you might
check out these:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...s/default.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...a/default.mspx

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...S/default.mspx

http://www.edbott.com/weblog/

http://blogs.technet.com/windowsvista/default.aspx

http://www.windows-now.com/

http://beta.channel9.msdn.com/

http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=77369

http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/forum-95.html

Also many of the people who help on this group have their own Vista sites
and all of them are good that they link at the bottom of their posts.

Good luck,

CH

Hi Hal,

Try running the "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) command from a elevated
command prompt. This will scan and attempt to repair your system files.
This tutorial will show you how to do it.
