It goes back to inactivated and is marked "stoppad" - stoped. In services.msc.
Can I update manual?

You cannot manually start the Automatic Updates service and you receive an "Error 1058"
error message on a computer that is running Windows XP or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Hey TaurArian - ive been reading all of the replies you have made about
"error 1058" im using Windows xp service pack 2 with Norton 360 - all of the
links you suggested are the same and they don't help - My system keeps
disabling windows update - i also checked that i have the nessesary programs
in "services" the other programs stay on "started" but its just windows
update.. it won't budge.....i even tried to re-register update in "run, it
said it suceeded... but still cannot change from disabled.... My question
now, is there a way to re-install windows update because i tried this and i
have XP-SP1a disc... i tried the link Microsoft suggested if i didn't have
service pack 2 disc and it doesn't work... PLEASE HELP! :-/

<quote> .......... There has been a noticeable increase in the
0x8DDD0018 error code posts with some posts including Error 1058.
It very well may be that these systems have been infected by a malware
known as Vundo.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/po...=Win32%2fVundo

After cleaning Vundo one then has to reset the
AU service and reinstall the Windows Update Agent [client].

Suggest you scan the system for the presence of Vundo. If the Windows
Malicious Software Tool is not installed nor scanned the system
recently, then suggest you first utilize it and see if it detects and
removes Vundo. Definitions for Vundo have been included in it since
March '08.
