Endless Download/Verify cycle

Just lately Wondows update was always downloading so I turned off Auto
updates and used the updates website. It correctly spots what downloads are
required, but one (and which one varies but it seems to be the second from
last whichever that is at the time) gets stuck downloading...verifying and so
on, downloading hundreds of times more data than the update actually
requires. It appears to be in an endless loop.

Same problem here, I have seen the problem on 2 machines. I am currently
downloading/installing the update for KB873339. The status says:

Verifying the download.

Then

Downloading 2.90 MB of 2.90 MB

then

Verifying the download

then Downloading 3.00 MB of 3.00 MB

and keeps adding .1 MB to the total, and it's stuck in a loop.

ARGH. Anyone have a possible fix for this?

I have seen this issue happen on 2 machines, but each update was different.
One was 873339. I forget the other update, but it was one of the 4 that was
released in December.

I've got the same problem on a Windows XP Pro laptop with all the latest
patches.

Last week after noticing Windows Update was constantly downloading,
I went to windows update site to download them, bit it just kept looping and
grew to over 250Mb.
I searched for each KB code and downloaded each update manually which seemed
to cure the problem.
However, after going to the update site today, I noticed its still
repeatedly looping.
This isn't isolated to my machine either, as at least one other XP machine
in the company is definately doing the same, and I've got 4 others I need to
check.

Same here. I have about 20 XP workstations, and 5 of them experience the same
issue. Can't find any solution to this issue. Manual update\install is not
what I'm looking for... need help.

Thanks

Do you have McAfee VirusScan on machines experiencing the error?

If so, this may help:

That did it!!!

It's so weird. I would have never thought of it since all our workstations
have the same configuration, and it seems odd that with the same version of
McAffee 8.0.i the update would work on some and not on others. Anyhow,
Thanks for the help.

Yes, Virusscan 8 is likely to be the problem. I had a broken V7 to V8
upgrade. I uninstalled 7 then ran a tool that NAI gave me to completely
clear out the old install, upgraded to 8 and it has been fine since. Not quite
what NAI say on that post, though.
