Yesterday an auto update from microsoft was downloaded by my laptop (Gateway-
Vista Home Premium) After the download to finish the installation the
coputer rebooted..... When it gets to the blue welcome window a message
(more or less)- "stage 3 update 0% complete" appears- after 10 minutes the
computer shuts down and repeats the above...... over and over for hours.
If I try booting it in safe mode- same problem
If I get the 'auto fix' screen- it reboots several times but ultimately the
same problem...
How can I stop this? What can I do to correct it.. (No I don't think I have
a recovery disk)
Thanks
Ray

You can download an ISO file that can be used to burn a recovery startup
disk. Booting to this will show an option to use System Restore.

Mark,
First thanks, that sounds like what I need.... Except..
Is that file 120 MegaBytes? Cause I can't download (Broadband) quicker than
1kb a sec- it will take days.

Well, you work with the tools you have, or get better ones. If you can't
borrow a vista setup disk to boot to, and your F8 (or other) options don't
include the recovery options, I see no choice for you. The seller of your
system should have cautioned you about backups.

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista

JesseRay
visit the site www.vistax64.com,and go to Tutorials section search for
"Recovery disc". There is a very detailed explanation for how to create a
recovery disc by Brink. Hope this helps.

Hey Jesseray; Its always funny when I go thru these threads looking for my
own salutions. It seems the experts have missed the part where your computer
wont boot at all let alone allow you to down load anything. I have also had a
problem or two with auto updates. In fact I lost a machine to an updat that
came down corrupted as it was telling me it was corrupted. to funny huh? Any
way it sounds like you are able to get into the safe menu. I'm sure you have
already tried this but what about last configuration that worked? If not then
you can use another recovery disk. Or if you can gain access to another
machine and the internet go to the site that mark mentioned. Be aware that if
you restore you will loose all your info. restore takes yuou back to the day
your machine was first opened. good luck. By the way, and this is probably
heresy I now have my updates set to download but let me decide when to
install them. This way I can see what is coming before it is installed.

A windows system restore shouldn't mess with your files.
An OEM 'recovery' disk will usually format and restore the system to the way
it came from the factory.

Have you tried booting from a Vista DVD and running the boot repair option?

Thanx for correcting mt error. I'm not all that experienced and often get
turned around on whats what. I thuoght that restore took the OS back to
original and that recovery simply patched the holes. I'll need to remember
that just incase.
