I had an error (don't remember the error number, but having diff prob now)
trying to update my windows xppro after running repair windows.
I followed the instructions in the newsgroup, which included first
downloading windows update software from a direct link. After that didn't
work, I followed next step which included stopping net services, renaming the
software distribution folder, restarting net services, rebooting and going to
windows update site. The next step in the process was to delete temp files &
online files from explorer, then repeat the stop/rename/start sequence.

Now, the screen with express/custom buttons appears, but when I click on
express, I get this error:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

when I click on register, it shows downloading, registering then presents
the express/custom page again--when I click, same message as before, over &
over.

How can I get this to work?

Try this simple first fix: open a command prompt window, and type:

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Then try Windows Update again. If that has not fixed the problem, come back
and ask for the next fix to try, which takes more effort.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I got a message that the command succeded,
went to the website--same problem, after click express, I get the same
message.

I am not bothered by more effort required--I am learning a lot with all the
problems I have been having...lol.

So, next fix, please.

Try downloading and running Dial-a-Fix from
http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix

Use its options to fix Windows Installer, fix Windows Update, and all the
Registration Center options.
Turn off the "Empty System32\Catroot 2"
Then click "GO"

Do not try "Flush SoftwareDistribution" yet.

Then try Windows Udpate again

I am having the same problem. When you say open a command prompt, do you me
go to start and then run? Then put in the regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Or are you talking about the dos section? I just put command prompt in
the start run and then put in the regsvr32 msxml3.dll and it said it not
recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.

Why doesn't Windows have a fix for this problem? Why do we need to go
searching other places for fixes?

Thank you again for your prompt reply. I had already downloaded dial-a-fix
when I originally had problems with crashing frequently...but I took one look
and said to myself "Self, this looks like you need more knowledge to use
this!"

I ran the program, went to the update site & had the same results.

Interestingly, the last 2 times I went to restart, there were downloads
waiting to be installed, so automatic update must be working. But, from
previous experience, I know there are about 90 updates that have to be
installed after running repair--that's why I was trying to use the update
page.

The Dial a Fix doesn't work for Vista, says the message when I tried loading
it.
I am in an endless loop with Windows Update for an update I have already
installed, for Windows Defender. I have rebooted, turn the PC off and on, and
still getting the prompts from Windows Update.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Follow this article -
The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site do not scan for updates when
you repair a failed installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or of Windows XP Service
Pack 1

Note the new WU Client 3.0 - Windows Update Agent: (the article mentions the old old)

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

Download and install Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7)

No, I mean click:
Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt

for the Windows command prompt, then type in:

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

That is because you opened the MS-DOS command prompt instead of the Windows
command prompt.
