Enter IP address directly in IE7 Address Bar

How can I directly enter an IP address in the IE7 address bar? Everytime I
try, IE7 auto-prefixes it with "http//www." text and suffixes a "/" to the
IP address, which then causes the IE7 to fail to find the site.

I need to do this so I can look at a gateway router attached to my PC. I
can see the router by typing the "www." after the "http//:" and then typing
"routerlogin.net", but directly entering the IP address of the router itself
does not work. Running WinXP Pro SP3.

Proper syntax is http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Yes, I know that, but like I said that does not work, you cannot get IEx to
accept that in the address bar. IEx automatically adds a "www." to the IP
address when you hit enter after typing it, so that it becomes
http://www.nnn.nnn.nn.nn/ which fails to connect. That is the problem. Try
it, you will see what I am talking about: IEx tries to convert it into a
URL name format.

That seems particularly User Vicious considering that there are
plenty of URLs which do not use "www" as the first part of the
address.

I wonder if WinXP just does not allow entering IP addresses directly, IOW it
is not a solvable problem.....

Is there some other way to go to an IP address?

It is not an XP issue. I do this every day with IE6 on several
versions of XP. And of course other browsers allow entry of
IP addresses regardless of OS.

Use this registry fix: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/RepairDefaultPrefix.reg

After downloading, right-click and merge.

Then, spend some time reading...

I don't know how Windows XP would figure into this. I have no problems on
any computer I try, using IE7, IE8, or Firefox.

Not the problem on my PC. Kaspersky's keeps me clean and safe.

Besides, like I said, the computer genie fixed it while I was not looking.....
