Eraser description
Remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several
times with selected patterns
Eraser is an advanced security utility, which enables you to
completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting
it several times with carefully selected patterns.

Eraser is FREE software and its source code is released under GNU
General Public License.

The patterns used for overwriting are based on Peter Gutmann's paper
"Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory" and
they are selected to effectively remove magnetic remnants from the
hard drive.

Shame that you can't guarantee to remove the magnetic remnants from a drive
just by writing to it, no matter how many times you do it or with what
pattern.

You can't remove magnetic remnants by over writing with a magnet that, by
its very design is meant to "leave" remnants.

A strong alternating current degaussing coil, such as used on color TV tubes
in the 60's and 70's, would do the job - if the disks/platters were removed
from the drive case.

Its worse than that.
When the data is written the head writes a strip Xnm wide.
When the head seeks back to that track it has an error of Ynm (where Y<X).
So when it writes the data it leaves a strip Ynm wide at the edge with the
original data.
Now you can seek to that track as many times as you like and write to it as
many times as you like but there is no way the software can guarantee to
ever write over the strip on both sides of the track so there may always be
some of the data left and you can get it back.
Any claim that it guarantees to remove the data is just a lie.

Congratulations Dennis! You FINALLY got something right. Maybe there's
hope for you yet. Someone should light a candle for you.

One day you will discover that you know very little.. you haven't
demonstrated much knowledge here AFAICS.
You just like to tell others they are stupid even when you are blatantly
wrong.

I don't have to demonstrate my expertise to anyone, since unlike you,
stroking my ego isn't the reason I post here.

I call it like I see it. If you act like a pompous ass, expect to be
treated as some pompous ass.

OMG!
Now that is by far the biggest fukkin lie I ever heard posted in any ng.
You lying POS...you're the one who proclaimed many times in the past
that your iq was 170...you're the one who has said many times in the
past that you're a computer expert.
Yet, with all that brain power and computer knowledge you can't seem to
get one tiny little install of Vista business to run correctly so what
do you do: blame MS and ridicule everyone else who has a properly
running install of Vista.
Let's face the real truth here adam albright, you're just a pompous big
mouth piece of sh*t blowhard loser as*hole and we all know it!
I know that really bruises your fragile ego...too bad...you deserve all
the criticism ever leveled at you...and that is a lot each and every day.
Try lying some more, dipsh*t!
Frank
