Erratic Mouse Behavior

I cannot find an answer from previous postings - perhaps now. I have XP and
my Logitech optical mouse died so I purchased a new one. It goes so
erratically and there is no controlling it. What can I do?

You download and install the newest drivers and have it on a surface
designed for optical mice?
Change the acceleration speed?

How does your questioni relate to Windows Update, Marion? (Try using the
mouse on a smooth, one-color surface.)
