My Live Messenger was working fine a few days ago - but now I am unable to
log into Live Messenger 8.1.0178.00

I get error code: 80072efd.

I disabled my Windows Live One Care Firewall - get the same results.

I added the .exe to the ALLOW section in Windows Live One Care firewall -
same results.

When I run the Connection Trouble Shooter - sometimes it says I have a
problem with my ports...I tell it to self correct..then it goes green - but
alas, I still can not connect with Messenger - get the same error code:
80072efd.

What else should I try - I have not reinstalled Live Messenger yet - is that
my next step?

Thanks...

Chris Hagler

Hi Chris,

Have you tried the simple fixes, yet?

Reboot the computer. If you have a Router, Reset to Factory Specs. Reset
the Modem or Cable Modem. Reboot the computer afterwards.

I have tried all those simple fixes...I am going to re-install messenger
tonight to see if that takes care of the problem. Will post an update if a
re-install is the solution.

Thanks...Chris

I rebooted my router and my cable modem - and the service started working
again. Odd....not sure what happened, but the reboot fixed the problem this
time.

OK, lets try this little fix.

Steps to register the msxml3.dll file on your computer.

1. Click Start - click Run - type "%windir%\system32\regsvr32
%windir%\system32\msxml3.dll" (without the quotes) and then click OK.
2. Click OK again
3. Try to sign in to MSN Messenger again.

I tried everything I read around, and I can't get through, I always get the
80072efd error code.

Does Messenger require some special ports open ?

I run XP sp2.

Yes, it does.

Do a search on Windows Live Messenger ports, and open the necessary ones.
