Hi,

This error usually happens because there is an invalid character in the
proxy override settings.
Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear
the proxy cache.

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. On the Tools, select Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab
4. Click on the LAN Settings
5. Click on the Advanced button.
6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section

Next, clear your proxy cache.
1. Click on Start, and then click Run
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type proxycfg -d at the command prompt, and press Enter
4. Type net stop wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter
6. Now try the site again.

Or try the following
A misconfigured Proxy/Firewall can cause this problem. Double-check
the Proxy/Firewall settings. Add the following urls to the exception list
within your Firewall/Proxy
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
For help configuring Proxy/Firewall refer to documentation or contact
the manufacturer.

Thank you

Eric

(WU_E_INVALID_PROXY_SERVER - invalid format for proxy list)

Can sometimes be caused by invalid proxy configuration. Try these standard
troubleshooter steps...

Remove invalid characters from the proxy exception list and then clear the
proxy cache.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools, select Internet Options.
3. Click on the Connections tab.
4. Click on the LAN Settings.
5. Click on the Advanced button.
6. Please delete any entry in the Exceptions section.

Next, clear your proxy cache.
1. Click on Start, and then click /Run.
2. Type cmd in the Open box to get a DOS prompt.
3. Type proxycfg -d at the command prompt, and press Enter.
4. Type net stop wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
5. Type net start wuauserv at the command prompt, and press Enter.
6. Now try the site again.

Unfortunately I tryed all your suggestion but doesn't work!
On my laptop if I use GPRS connection it works, but if I use a proxy server
(ISA) I get the error.
I tryed to modify the ISA configuration without caching the domains
suggested but it doesn't work again but the error change now is 0x80244019.

Have you more suggestion?
Thanks Fabrizio

I had the same problem as the one you are experiencing; I took the following
stapes and resolved the issue (actually Nilesh from MSFT) provided me with
the following:

Suggestion 1:
=========
This error can occur if your Internet connection or configuration is
preventing access to the Windows Update site. We can resolve this issue by
changing the option that prevents access to the Windows Update site. The
steps for doing this are as follows:

First we will have to disable the Automatic configuration and proxy, enable
"Use HTTP 1.1" and "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" in Internet
Options and then add the Windows Update sites to your trusted sites. To do
this you can try the instructions provided below:

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Connections tab.
4. Click LAN Settings button.
5. In the Automatic configuration frame, Uncheck both "Automatically detect
settings" and “Use automatic configuration script”
5. In the Proxy Server frame, Uncheck the Use a proxy server for your LAN
check box.
6. Click OK button
7. Now Click "Advanced" tab, and look for the HTTP 1.1 settings
8. Select the "Use HTTP 1.1" check box.
9. Select the "Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" check box.
10. Now we need to Click the Security tab.
11. Click the Trusted sites icon.
12. Click the Sites button.
13. Clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this
zone check box, if its marked.
14. Type the following sites in the box below Add this Web site to the zone:
and Use the Add button next to the Add the Web site to the zone box:

http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

15. Click OK button.
16. Again Click on OK button to save all the settings made. Close the
Internet Explorer window.

I did not shut down programs like AdSubtract, nor Zone Alarm or McAffe at
any given time during this operation

Goog luck, I hope this work for you as it did for me!!

Ok. You advise to contact the manufacture of the proxy server? I run ISA 2000
of which Microsoft is the manufacture. Do they have a fix for the problem of
the Windows Update program not using or asking for credentials? Is Microsoft
going to release an update for the Windows Update client so that it will use
the security measures that Microsoft recommends in corporate environments? It
is ironic that MS is selling the ideal of SP2 on the security issues but in
order to use the new windows update site you have to lower (or allow
anonymous) security.

Looking for a better solution.....

I've tried doing this, but after carrying out step 5, I get an error message:
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" (or
something like that).
