Error 0x80072EE2 is: ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT - The request has timed out.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941
You receive an "Error 0x80072EE2" or "Error 0x80072EFD" error message when you try to
use Windows Update

See also:
When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x8024402C, 0x80240030 or 0x8024502d error.

also another user’s solution: "GK" wrote:

Here is how I was able to work around the problem.
Using command prompt
1. proxycfg -d (to clear proxy cache)
2. net stop wuauserv (to stop Automatic updates service)

Using Windows Explorer
3. Delete all files and folders in
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution (your windows folder may vary)

Again using command prompt
4. net start wuauserv (to start Automatic updates service)

Try now going back to Windows Update web page.

This worked wonders for me with SP2 installed. Have been
looking for months for this solution. Even Microsoft
could not solve. Thank you.

This workaround sorted my download problem out too. I managed to get as far
as the download stage, but when I clicked on download, the byte count stayed
at 0 and it timed out after a few minutes. Deleting the SoftwareDistribution
folder worked a treat.
Thanks

Even if I didnt' completely understand why to delete
the content of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution directory. :-)

The method makes my PC back to normal as well. Although the same, I do not
understand why.

It worked on me, I am running Windows Vista Home Premium, first I deleted as
much as I could in SOftwareDistribution folder, then I got error 80070003 and
then Windows Help Files walked me easily on solving this, by stoping Windows
Update services and deleting content on two specific folders. Thanks!
