"Viv -",
Please tell us a little more information. For example:
1. Were you able to install updates before this?
2. Did you just upgrade this system to Windows XP from another OS, such as
Windows 98, Millenium Edition, or Windows 2000?
3. Were you trying to install just one update?
4. When you hit the failure, where did it occur?
a. Attempting to reach the
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com website?
b. After clicking to Scan for updates?
c. After finding updates, and before completion of installation of
updates?
The easiest answer would be to rerun the attempt, and reply back to the
posting with the following:
1. Rerun the attempt, but wait to watch your computer clock. Wait for the
clock to move forward to a new minute. Memorize this hour and minute.
2. Reply back to this posting, and state the time you just memorized.
3. Open the WindowsUpdate.log, and paste the failed attempt as related in
that log. Here's how to do that:
a. Click Start
b. Click Run
c. Type or copy: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
d. Type the <Enter> key or click OK
e. After the log opens, move down to the bottom of the log by typing
<CTRL>
and the <End> keys.
f. Move up the log to the time you memorized earlier as the beginning of
the
attempt.
g. Select the beginning of the line for that time entry, and select
everything below it to the end of the log, by clicking and dragging down
and to the right.
h. Press <CTRL> and then <C> key for copy.
i. Move over to the reply you made to this posting.
j. In that window, press <CTRL> and then <V> to paste in those log
entries.
k. Tell us, at the top of the post, which download you attempted to
install.
l. Post the reply with the log entries.
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
