System: Windows XP Pro (x86) SP3

Issue: Windows Update or Microsoft Update Fails
with Error : 0x80070002

When running either updater we see successful:

Download, Copy, and Registeration of the Update, but then it fails
to the Error : 0x80070002 screen.

We have followed all steps provided by the Microsoft Online Assisted Support
and the Resolve This Problem Yourself links displayed in the error screen
with no success.

We searched the Newsgroup and found an additional KB 910336 which instructs
the entire removal of the SoftwareDistribution folder. This was also
unsuccessful.

Have you already checked for minifilters, as described in this MSKB ? :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922582

If yes, suggest you determine if 3rd party software is causing the issue
by Clean Booting XP:

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

IF HP software is installed you may receive an Access Denied message
when using the System Configuration Utility to disable 3rd party Services.
You can disable HP related Services using the Services console before
running MSConfig.
Then disable all HP Startup items in MSConfig.

IF a 3rd party firewall is being used, ensure that the native XP
firewall is Enabled prior to attempting to download/installling updates.

If the error still occurs, please post the *last* 50 or so lines of the
WindowsUpdate.log after the last update attempt:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

If this is a sudden, new problem, there is a very good chance that you are
seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Thanks PA Bear.

We will look into this, but system has an updated version of Trend Micro
running and it is not reporting any vulnerabilities.

What if your TM application's been compromised, too?
