I have read tons of posts and everyone seems to be having this error with sp's
i have windows xp home edition ver 5.1 build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254:
sp2. I've been reading posts and helps for hours now. please help!

I was reviewing my installed updates and found 2 that had red x's beside
them, they are:

Security update for windows xp KB926436 and
Cumulative Security update for internet explorer for windows xp KB928090
Feb 15, 2007
Both with the same error 0X80070005

Is there something I should do? Do I need these? Why didn't they download?

Can someone please advise me? Thanks, frustrated.

Kim

1. Open Add/Remove Programs & make sure the Show Updates box is checked.

2. Scroll down. Do you find the following updates listed?...

Security Update for Windows XP (9264360

Security Update for Windows XP (KB939653) or
Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer (KB939653)

3. If you do, don't worry about anything, and make certain Automatic Updates
is enabled.

Typo there, sorry. Look for "Security Update for Windows XP (KB926436)"
instead.

Also tell me if Windows Update website offers you any critical updates and
if you have IE7 installed. (I would not recommend installing IE7 via
Windows Update if it's not already installed.)

yes the KB926436 is there. Window update website doesn't offer me any
critical updates. Earlier this evening it updated a windows genuine
advantage validation tool KB892130 (don't know if that is critical, doesn't
sound like it but you be the judge). Also I have had IE7 installed for
quite some time now. Thanks so much for your help!

0x80070005 - "access denied" to the registry keys involved in Windows Update
Do you have an anti virus or something similar that is preventing WU for
accessing the necessary registry keys?

Otherwise you can reset registry and file ACLs to their Default state by
following the directions here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archi...04/739820.aspx

Good luck, HTH

Everything's OK, don't worry about nothin'!

> I was reviewing my installed updates and found 2 that had red x's beside
> them...

The red x only means the update failed to install on the cited date, not
that it's not installed.
