My windows update software has stopped working. I receive error 0x80070020
each time. I'm running Window XP Home Edition service pack 2.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You receive a "0x80070020 The process cannot access the file because it is
being used by another process" error message when you try to download an
update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;883825
If you're running SpyBot S&D's "teatimer" then you'll need to end the
process in task manager - thanks to VBBob

I encountered the similiar problem on my laptop.
and the following answer worked well in solving my problem:

Is this XP SP2, 32 bit ? If yes, then download the latest Windows Update
Agent from here:
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

Then download and save KB927891 if it has not been installed.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
*** Change the Language if need be prior to downloading it ***

Save them, do not run them while the browser is open or the Automatic
Update service is running.
Close the browser and any other open programs.

Stop the Automatic Update service via services.msc for now.
Check to see if BITS [Background Intelligent Transfer Service]
is Started. If so, Stop it for now.
[NOTE: BITS only needs to be set to Manual for it's Startup type when
doing Automatic Updates or manual updates at the update sites]

Now install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe
Then install KB927891
Restart the system

If anyone out there has Spybot Search & Destroy and while trying to run
Windows update you receive the error number 0x80070020 and this message:

"Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the
requested page".

I corrected the problem in my computer. It was the "Tea Timer" in Spybot S&D.

Bring up Spybot S&D and click on mode.....then select advanced mode....click
yes in the pop up box.

Then click tools at lower left....then click resident.....then uncheck the
Resident "Tea Timer" box.

X out and that should do it and hopefully most will be able to get the
Windows updates.

You can go back after updating and put "Tea Timer" back on by following the
above steps. You may have to do the same thing next time you update unless
Spybot S&D fixes the glitch in the meantime.

PS - "Tea Timer" ( if you have Spybot S&D) is an overall protection of
settings on your computer.
