I have windows vista home premium SP2. I cannot install Update KB978207. I
tried all 4 methods suggested on MS website: (1) restart, (2) safe mode, (3)
clean boot, (4) disable firewall/antivirus. None worked - continued to get
error message 0x80070020.

I then manually downloaded Update KB978207, and tried to install again in
safemode. Got error 0x8007043c "this service cannot be started in safe
mode".

Apparently, this update is "critical" for Vista users. How do I get it
installed?

Detect & remove the hijackware blocking the install of the update?

Or perhaps see the "How to obtain help" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978207?

Hello Ander,

Just out of curiosity, are you running SpyBot S&D's "teatimer" ?

I've already visited the help pages of the website. That's where it was
suggested I try the 4 methods - which I tried to no avail.

No. Not to my knowledge.

The "How to obtain help..." section also points you to no-charge support.

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY
(and/or 1-866-234-6020 and/or 1-800-936-5700) in the United States and in
Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge
for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call,
clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the
update's KB number (e.g., KB978207).

LOOK! => If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE
(e.g., KB978207), call the above number and ask to be transferred to the
"Consumer IE queue" (which is 47830).

Or you can...

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

The Consumer Security Support home page & Microsoft Update Solution Center
also offer support options
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527#tab3

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.
