Mila's Fix:

remove wups.dll from
c:\WINDOWS\system32\SoftwareDistribution\Setup\Ser viceStartup\wupds.dll\5.8.0.2469
After removing this file, Windows Update works great.

I'd had the above error code on my 2005 XP Home (SP2). I did NOT have the
aforementioned type of anti-virus (name of which escapes me), I had McAffee
installed by the OEM (by the way, disabling it still resulted in the error
code). There were no other mentions of this error code otherwise anywhere
else. Mila is a genius. I was finally able to download & install 25 updates
for the first time since I purchased the computer in June. Thanks again Mila.
I used Start > Search to find wupds.dll, and there it was in that long file
above. Presto.
