When I tried to install the windows update component, it pauses on
"registering... 100%" and then generates a 0x8007041D error. Then I can still
get to windows update home and see the 2 buttons (Express & Custom). I click
on "Custom" and I get an error 0x80070006.

I searched everywhere on google/microsoft/ etc. I tried reviewing the
windowsupdate.log file, verified no-proxy, verfied we don't have a software
firewall (we're using w2k server), verfied we don't have Panda anti-virus
software (we currently use Symantec Norton AV), verified that we put the
updates site in "Trusted Sites" section. Still nothing works...

Does anyone know of anything about this or have a fix?

Thanks in advance.

siqi,

yeah, I already looked at this page. unfortunately it doesn't apply to us
because we don't use the NOD32 antivirus program... we use Symantec AntiVirus
(Norton)

I got a 0x8007041D error under circumstances similar to what you
describe. I have XP with SP-2 installed and Norton Antivirus. I
finally went to the Norton Antivirus System Status Report and clicked
on Live Update. Norton did its thing rapidly and the computer went
through the automatic restart. Then I went to Windows Update and found
everything to be in perfect order. I don't know if this will work for
anyone else, but I don't think trying it can hurt anything. I had
spent the day studying everything I could find in the way of
suggestions, but everything sounded too complicated for me, a computer
ignoramous. I needed a simple fix, and I thought I recalled that when
XP-2 came out there was something said about it interfering in some way
with Norton but that Norton would come up with something to correct
that. Well, whatever the reason, what I did seems to have worked in my
case. I hope it will for you too.

Actually I found my computer was infected by the W32.Esbot.A virus and was
trying to download the update to fix the Plug-and-Play thing.

The virus was so hard to remove, but well, after I finally killed all the
infected copies, I found I was able to use the Windows update!

By the way, for killing the virus, I had to go to the Norton website to find
out some information about how to remove it manually. It's not quite the same
as decribed in the Norton article. Basically you need to update your Norton's
virus profile and disable the Windows Mouse Synchronization service. And then
restart W2k in the safe mode and do a virus scan to kill those bad ".exe" and
"mousesync.exe" in the system32 folder.

Hope this might help.
