Error 0x8007043B on manual update

My son got some kind of virus from AIM - I have that cleaned up - for the
most part - but now when I try to get updates for XP Media center - I get
error 0x8007043B. Microsoft tells me it's not due to the update program, but
a problem with Windows. I also can not turn auto updates on - it appears to
be on but when I check it with services.msc it's not running.

Do I have some type of registry problem here?

Any help is appreciated.
