Hi, I have trouble with this error not allowing me to run windows update. On
the windows update webpage, It checks my comp and then I have a choice for
Express Install or Custom Install and for both it goes to this error. The
auto update doesn't appear to be running although I turned it on. When I go
to services.msc and try to manually start it, it says "Could not start the
Automatic Updates service on Local Computer. Error 1804: This service cannot
be started in Safe Mode". This is my parents' computer that I built for
them. It has Windows XP Pro SP1 with only a couple updates since they are on
dialup I turned everything off. By the way, the Windows CD came as XP Pro
SP1, and yes, I definitely bought it, OEM from newegg. They had a lot of
spyware that I've worked on also, it seems to be clear finally. Already
tried things posted in this newsgroup below (from Torgeir), tried the KB
article, and googled for help to no avail. I'm not in safe mode, I don't
have Norton. I am behind a router but I have 2 computers here that have
always been fine with windows update, and they were initially OEM discs from
newegg as well although not SP1. Also, I cannot log into my bank account
website with this computer, which is what someone else said below with the
https maybe. When I was clearing spyware, I noticed one changed my security
level in IE's Internet Options, Security tab. It was custom and I couldn't
edit it. Right now it shows as Medium but the Custom Level button is grayed
out, fishy.Ok fixed that but still can't login to bank site. Now I found
that the Windows Installer service seems to be missing or not registered or
something, and supposedly you can't reinstall it because "Windows Installer
2.0 is included with Windows. You do not have to perform this step if you use
Windows XP". Well nothing else in Article 315346 worked since the registry
key the mention, MSIServer, doesn't exist for me. So I tried method 2, which
seemed to work, but when I try to start the Windows Installer service in
services.msc it says "Error 1804: This service cannot be started in Safe
Mode". I think this is related.

Any help? Please... I really want to get the updates and SP2 for the better
security. I'm really trying hard here too as you can see.

Mike,

Try running sfc /scannow to verify system files are intact :
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378
a. Click Start, and then click Run.
b. In the Open box, type sfc /scannow
and then click OK.

Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service
Pack 1 installation media.

There's a strong possibility that the malware damaged/corrupted system
files.

I checked the specific error message

Error 1804: This service cannot be started in Safe Mode

and you're the only hit on Google for a Win Update issue. At least you
have a claim to fame.

Are you certain that the infestation has been removed ?

Yes, I may have files scattered around somewhere, but finally nothing comes
up in the process list and the msconfig list is clean. Also current AdAware
and HijackThis both come up clean. I notice savedump.exe [System] comes up
in the process list but from searching that seems to be ok, although I
haven't seen it before on my computers.

I ran sfc /scannow and the cmd window flashed up and disappeared! Then I
tried to log into this site with that comp to post this reply to you but .NET
Passport says I don't have cookies enabled. I changed the security level to
LOW and got the same result! I ran sfc /scannow on my computer just to see
it and it worked fine.

Yeah I'm famous, I'm so happy....

Please note that since I've been working on this computer, the welcome
screen does come up even though there is only one user and guest account is
off. The choices on the welcome screen are my parents' name, and
Administrator. It used to just go straight to their account without this
screen.

Thanks for your help.

When I try sfc /scannow in a cmd window, it says "Windows File Protection
could not initiate a scan of protected system files. The specified error
code is 0x000006ba [The RPC server is unavailable.]."

I did the test in article 814597 to rename calc.exe to calc.old and see if
Windows File Protection will replace it. It didn't so I guess it isn't
running at all.
