Error 0x80070570: The file or directory is corruped and unreadable

I created a gif image from a jpg and saved it to the destop, viewed it and
decided to delete it and received the error "Error 0x80070570: The file or
directory is corruped and unreadable". I rebooted and attempted to delete
any of the images located on the desktop only to get the same error.
