error 0x80072EE4

The unchecking of the Internet options and the Start-Run- list of things to
run worked for a couple of downloads, and now again I still get error
0x80072EE4 wether I click custom or express install... the last
download/install was Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for
Windows XP (KB912812), and I know there's at least 40 more (just did a full
recovery and yes, firewall allows windows update in) Using Windows XP pro
and really need to access Windows Update.

update: this error occurs wether starting Windows Update from the start menu
or from the IE Tools menu

0x80072EE4 - System-wide proxy settings corrupt.

How the Windows Update client determines which proxy server to use to connect to

Also check - the computer's date and time are accurate and that the Internet
Explorer language option is not empty.
To verify that your computer is configured with the correct date and time
settings:
1. Click Start > click Control Panel
2. Click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click Date and
Time
3. Select the Date & Time tab
4. Check to make sure that the date and time settings are configured to use the
current date and time, and then click OK
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
1. Click "Tools" and then choose "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Languages" button
3. Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language Options" dialog.

Delete the Internet cache and cookies.
1. Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
2. Click "Delete Cookies".
3. Click "Delete Files"
