Error 0x80072efd and I've Tried the Usual Fixes

On Server 2003 Std x64 R2 SP2, I'm getting error 0x80072efd and I've included
an excerpt from Windowsupdate.log below. I already tried the trusted sites
guidance appearing in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941. This didn't
help. What is the fix for this situation? I've already spent more time on it
than I can afford.

This is what's causing the connection failure.
See if this is applicable:
