Perform all of the steps on the subject error in the Microsoft Knowledge Base
(add "http://update.microsoft.com" and "http://download.windowsupdate.com" to
trusted sites; modify the proxy server configuration, etc.). Also, I
received the following command from Microsoft's help line (not in the online
documentation) to reset the winsock:
enter "netsh winsock reset" at the command prompt.
Even after all this, Norton Internet Security seems not to agree with
Windows Update for XP, so I had to disable it. However, be sure to enter
Control Panel and setup your Windows Firewall for some level of protection
before disabling NIS and running Windows Update.
All this should allow a successful update. Good luck.
