I am NOT running a firewall...well, Windows Firewall, but I've already tried
to shut that off and it still comes up with the error. This is my plain old
simply home computer..no network, nothing fancy. I'm not all that computer
savvy, so plain layman terms would be very helpful.

This is driving me insane.

Thanks for any help.

You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use Windows Update or
Microsoft Update to install updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

An anti-spyware program, web accelerator, Internet security/antivirus program may be
interfering with the Windows Update Services (SVCHOST) accessing the Internet.

You could try adding the following Trusted Sites to IE:
1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. Click the Security tab.

4. Click the Trusted sites icon.

5. Click the Sites button.

6. Clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone
check box.

7. Use the Add button next to the Add this Web site to the zone box to add the
following sites:
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com

8. Click OK.
