Windows update was working fine in 32bit mode. I had to do a system restore
and since then the updates haven't worked. I went back to the earlier restore
point but it still doesn't work. I tried everything suggested in The KB, but
it's still not working. There's only one entry in my hosts file: 127.0.0.1
localhost. I applied a registry fix, as posted on this forum, no use. I'm
pretty desperate to get the updates working again as X64 is so buggy.

Try this, a little bit of work but it may be worth a shot.
Uninstall SP2, re-install it and try again.

Thanks for trying Steve, I'm running XP X64, so uninstalling SP2 doesn't apply

Well, I finally sorted my problem with the 80072EFD error.

I had been disabling the nVidia nForce Firewall that comes with my Asus
A8N-SLI Deluxe nForce4 Motherboard, to no avail. I am also running McAfee
Enterprise Version 8.0i antivirus software, which has limited port blocking
capabilities. When I disabled this software Windows Update performed
perfectly. So maybe you can learn something for my situation.
