I installed SP2 without shutting down ZA.

I do not need to close down ZA to run WU.

I don't know who told you such a thing. The only point to
worry about is to allow "Generic host process for win32
service" to pass through ZA if you need to run WU.

I got the same Error code,....and temporarily disabled the Fire
Wall....success! I was then able to downlod the updates...then re-enabled
the firewall.

In ZoneAlarm, add these sites to trusted zone: windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com; v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com;
download.microsoft.com. Allow internet access to windowsupdate or critical
update, etc. Then follow this link to setup 'internet options control
panel', 'security' and 'connections' tabs:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836941.
-Or just turn ZA off as you did.
