Good Day,
This error DROVE me crazy. I found that DISABLING NORTON ANTIVIRUS completely allowed me to complete my updating. I mean that you shoud DISABLE, using the TASK MANAGER, ALL of the NORTON program. For instance, open TASK MANAGER, and manually disable CCAPP.EXE, CCEVTMGR.EXE, and CCSETMGR.exe. These are ALL NORTON processes. To be factual, I found that disabling CCAPP.EXE alone solved my problem... but just in case. Also, be sure to go to the SERVICES menu (in ADMIN TOOLS) and STOP the NORTON AUTOPROTECT SERVICE... the NORTON icon will disappear from the right taskbar indicating that NORTON is completely shut down. Be sure to have a FIREWALL running when you shut down your antivirus. I UNINSTALLED and then RE-INSTALLED NORTON and my problem went away. I suspect Norton got corrupted in some way. I have ZONE ALARM Pro running and I do NOT have to disable it... be sure to get the LATEST version. I suspect that this is the cause for most of us. If it is not NORTON, then it could be another disgruntled program from Microsoft's list (see below). Please DISABLE any and all UNNECESSARY processes using TASK MANAGER and then attempt ot update. You may need to uninstall and then re-install the offending application. I have included a copy of an email received from Microsoft from the tech support department. Although, it came after I figured it out, I post it here in it's entirety for your information... it is a USEFUL guide for trouble shooters. "Hello, Thank you for contacting Microsoft Windows Update Support. My name is Rajesh, I have taken the ownership of the case and will be assisting you with your Windows Update issue. Firstly, please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience you have experienced, and as well for the long delay in the response. Every message that Microsoft receives is very important, but we have recently received an extremely high volume of e-mail messages and are working diligently to catch up, and because of this our response time is delayed. We appreciate your patience. I understand that you are encountering 0x80072F76 error on Windows Update site. I realize the importance of getting this issue resolved and look forward to provide you with appropriate suggestions. If I have misunderstood your concern then let me know. **IMPORTANT: If you are running Ad-aware or ZoneAlarm or PC-Cillin or Norton Antivirus or Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall or Proxomitron pop-up blocker or Ad Muncher or web accelerator e.g. "Slipstream", I would recommend you to temporarily disable or shut down any of these installed on your system and try accessing Windows Update site. Be sure to enable them again when you complete the update process. If you can access the Windows Update site with these applications disabled, then you may need to add the Windows Update site to the applications exception, or ‘do not block’ list. Please see the applications documentation on how to do This. See if you can access Automatic Updates, if issue still persists then try suggestion given below. . . After doing some research on your issue, I have found some troubleshooting steps which should resolve this issue. I would appreciate your time in trying the same and providing me with the result of it at your earliest convenience. Suggestion 1: *********** We have found that this issue can occur when system DLL files that Windows Update requires to run are not been registered correctly on your system. To register there files, kindly follow the steps mentioned below: Note: If you encounter any errors while registering any of the files then skip that file and then continue with the next one. 1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer. Note: There is a space between regsvr32 and the .dll file 2. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wuapi.dll in the Open box and click OK. 3. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll in the Open box and click OK. 4. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll in the Open box and click OK. 5. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wucltui.dll in the Open box and click OK. 6. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wups.dll in the Open box and click OK. 7. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wuweb.dll in the Open box and click OK. 8. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 jscript.dll in the Open box and click OK. 9. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 atl.dll in the Open box and click OK. Once you have completed the above mentioned steps, kindly try to connect to the Windows Update site and try to download the Updates, if issue still persists then kindly try suggestions given below. . . Suggestion 2: *********** Jasper, we will change the proxy information to NOT automatically detect settings as this issue can also occur if your proxy setting are configured to automatically detect settings. 1. Click Start/ Settings and choose Control Panel. 2. Choose Network and Internet Connections and then choose Internet Options (or go straight to Internet Options in classic view). 3. Click the Connections tab. 4. Click the LAN Settings button. 5. In the Automatic configuration frame uncheck "Automatically detect settings" and uncheck “Use automatic configuration script” 6. Click OK and then OK again to close the window. See if you can access Automatic Updates, if the issue stays after completing the steps above then, please try the next suggestion. Suggestion 3: *********** This issue can also occur if Security settings in Internet Explorer not set to Medium or lower for ActiveX files to correctly pass to your computer. Only the Web sites listed in Internet Explorer's Trusted Sites Zone will be affected by the lowering of Security settings. Your current security settings for all other Web sites will remain as they are currently configured. 1. From the main toolbar in Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options. 2. Click Security. 3. Click Trusted Sites Zone. 4. Click Sites. 5. Clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zonecheck box. 6. Use the Add button next to the Add this Web site to the zone box to add the following sites: http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com https://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com http://download.windowsupdate.com 7. Click OK. Now try accessing the automatic updates and check if you can access the same. Your feedback is very important to us, to further enhance our support hence I would appreciate your confirmation on the Suggestion that addressed in resolving the issue for you. If our issue persists, kindly provide me with a copy of following as these files will help us record the errors encountered in the process and get more detailed information about the cause of the issue. Please follow the steps given below to locate the file. 1] Windows Update Log: 1. Click “Start” and then click “Run”, 2. In the Run box, type “WindowsUpdate.log” (WITH quotes) and click OK, 3. It will open in Notepad. On the File menu, click “Save As”, 4. Save the file to the Desktop. 2] System Information file: Click on Start, then Run, then type MSINFO32 and click OK. On the System Information window that opens, click on File, then Save, and save the file to your desktop (Give it a name easy for you to remember and pick out) Include this file with the above file. NOTE: Please send the above files to me at v- in a NEW email (Do not reply to this message, your attachments will be lost). Jasper, I look forward to hearing from you! If you have any further questions regarding your issue, please send them to v- in a New email (Do not reply to this message, your attachments will be lost). Please include your case number, SRZ041114002170, in the subject line. I am more than happy to be of assistance and am standing by for your update. Thank you, Best Regards, Rajesh Microsoft Support Professional Product Support Services " |

Jazzyjazz: Thank You s-o-o-o-o much!! This has been driving me crazy TOO.
I followed the MS Update Support attachment to your solution and the first thing I tried worked: TURN OFF ZONE ALARM!!! I have had many things go wrong with my Windows XP since I installed ZA. I like the security, but it's a real pain when it interferes with everyday maintenance. Thanks again. "Jazzyjazz" wrote: > Good Day, > > This error DROVE me crazy. I have fought this problem for 2 days now. I have "Zone Alarm Security
Suite" and once I shut it down I was able to use the "Windows Update" again. I don't know what happened, because I have not had any problems before with "Zone Alarm Security Suite". Maybe this will help other people. Because I had tried everything before doing the above. ................ Cyberdrifter "Jazzyjazz" wrote: > Good Day, > > This error DROVE me crazy. My milage varied. Cyberdrifter's problem (and solution) was identical to mine. I'd suggest anyone who copies, turn on Windows Firewall while ZoneAlarm is down. Only when I log onto my MSN and enter http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us that I am able to get through error 0x80072F76 and access windows update WITHOUT DISABELING any thing. -- Cathy "Jazzyjazz" wrote: > Good Day, > > This error DROVE me crazy.
