I get this error when visiting the windows update site along with "The
website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying
to view".

I have looked for the safer key in the following locations:

Software>Policies>Microsoft>SystemCertificates>Tru stedPublisher under both
HKLM & HKCU and it does not exist.

Anything else i can try???

0x80092026 CRYPT_E_SECURITY_SETTINGS
The cryptographic operation failed due to a local security option setting

Which antivirus is installed and has this error occurred in the past or
is it recent ?
Is a 3rd party firewall installed ?
And, which edition of Windows, Service Pack, and Version of Internet
Explorer is this ?

Thanks for the reply.

This started happening on XP SP2 - now running XP SP3 and have experienced
this on IE7 and now IE8. No 3rd party Firewall and Antivirus was Sophos, now
NOD32 and still the same.

This started happening in March this year and has been like it ever since.

You're welcome. Was this error resolved in SP2 or was SP3 applied in the
hope that it's application would resolve it ?

Some 'thing' is either setting a local security option, interfering with
Cryptographic service when the system hits the update sites, corrupting
the contents of CatRoot2.

Suggest you give this a shot -
1) Clean boot XP to rule out 3rd party software interference:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

2) Then follow the Steps laid out in this MSKB as it specifically
mentions this error:
> Name of Update Package
> The cryptographic operation failed due to a local security option setting.

You cannot install some updates or programs
