error 0x80096005

Everytime I click on the windows update icon, IE opens up and says it is
checking for the latest software on my comp. Immediately after that, i get
the following message:

[Error number: 0x80096005]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:

Windows Update Newsgroups

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

Anyways, I haven't been able to update my system in a while.

Try turning on Automatic updates in the control panel and let it update
itself.
