I just performed a clean install of Vista Ultimate. After downloading all
the Vista updates, using Windows Update. Most updates installed while a few
failed.

I re-installed Office Pro 2007. I tried to install "Microsoft Update so I
could get Vista & Office updates on one screen.

From the 'Windows Update' screen I clicked 'Get updates for more products'.
That takes me to '
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr....aspx?ln=en-us
'. I except the 'Terms of Use' and click 'Install'. I click UAC to continue
and immediately encounter the followng failure and error message:

*******************
Microsoft Update could not be installed on your computer

Make sure that you log on as an administrator or as a member of the
Administrators group, and then try again.

More troubleshooting options

If your computer is connected to a network and the problem persists, contact
your system administrator to see if your Microsoft Update settings are
managed using group policy.
If your computer is not connected to a network, or if your system
administrator has not disabled Microsoft Update, check if the Windows Update
service is disabled or stopped. To see how to start a service, search Help
and Support on your computer.

Note: If you experience problems with installing Microsoft Update, you can
continue to get updates for your computer by going to Windows Update in
Control Panel.

[Error number: 0x800A0046]

*******************

I tried searching for that error number and found most questions & answers
to be several years old. I checked a few of them out and found I already had
there solution in place. Hoping for more up to date answers I am posting
this messa.

What do I do next?????

Thank you for your reply.

I tried your suggestion. I might add that my confidence in it working was
nil.

There were only two logins on my computer: mine (Admin) and guest
(disabled). I am in the USA so only use english. How could I have a
double-byte character in my login name????

But, I did try it and you can imagine my amazement when it worked.

Whomever wrote that web page made the assumption that EVERYONE uses the
standard Vista Start Menu. There is no search box in the 'Classic Menu'.
Based on the phrase 'Control userpasswords' I made the assumption that 'User
Accounts' in Control Panel (which I also use in Classic mode) was what was
meant.

I am just one of many thousands that DO NOT like the Vista inteface. I
can't tell you how many computers I set back to classic. I have been in the
computer business for over thirty years. I don't need glitz. I need
stability

If MS would stop throwing away what works for 'new and UN-improved' people
would be a lot happier.
