"Automatic Update" is failing to start. Let's verify. Please register the
following Files:

Click Start > Run > Type the follow commands in the Open box (one at a time,
in sequence):

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wups.dll

Any errors registering any of the files? If so, please post the error
message

Next, try Stopping and Restarting the Automatic Update service

Click Start >Run
Type "Services.msc" (w/o quotes)
Press OK
Find "Automatic Update"
Stop and restart the service.

Do you get an error message?

every one worked with no error but the second one...here is the error

"...wuauclt.exe was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found

....\wuauclt.exe does not appear to be a .DLL or .OCX file"

seems the automatic update, whenever i go look after something like this, is hung at "stopping" and requires a restart.

Unless I post otherwise, I believe that it will not update upon reboot-and we need to resolve this specifically with the auto update service. is there a way to uninstall and manually reinstall said service?

I think that that must have been a typo. There are no external entry points
in that module (let alone one for DllRegisterServer.)

However, there are some other registerable modules which start with wu:

wuaueng.dll
wuaueng1.dll
wuweb.dll

The latter has nothing to do with Automatic Update and is just being
included for completeness.

Anyone having this Error#0x800A01AD problem should first check to see if
their Automatic Update service has been stopped for some reason. I tried all
the other fixes first without solving the error problem. After reading Lucy's
post saying to stop and restart the Automatic Update Service, I went there
and found out that it was stopped already. I restarted it and the update site
works fine now. I have no idea how it ever got set to stopped. I know I did
not do it. Anyone have any idea how it would get stopped?

My services dont even show and entry for "Automatic Update service" -
what does that mean. I have the 0x800A01AD issue.

Possibly! Since you haven't bothered to disclose your OS you allow
us many more possibilities of being right! For example, using the
DLL Help Database we see that NT4 could have sc.exe (from the
NT4 RK) but not have wuauserv.dll.
