I'm hoping someone can help me with the following error:

Windows Update Error

Windows Update has encountered an error. This may be due to a discrepancy in
your computer's time setting.

To check your date and time setting:

On the taskbar, double-click the time.
Verify that the date and time is correct.

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows
Update.

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800C0008)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident;
you may or may not receive a response.

I'm running Win98SE and my clock settings are correct. It's probably been
about 8 months since I've run Windows Update, but I've never had a problem
in the past. I haven't installed any new software either. I've searched
Google and tried a few tweaks, and nothings helped. I can't find anything
of substance via Microsoft Support either. I've run a defrag and a virus
scan. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. If
additional information is needed, please let me know. Thanks in advance.

and it helped once, but it came back again today!

Thanks PA Bear! I had tried all the options you listed below, with the
exception of your option 4. http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updtcl.htm .
This site again listed everything I've tried, with the exception of
suggesting I try the secure link directly. Instead of using the IE tools
setting to get to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp , I
instead, as the site suggest used the following link
https://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and it worked. It
looks like the only difference is secure vs. non-secure. I'm unsure why
this has happened, but in any case I'm now able to access and view the
available updates. I haven't downloaded them yet, but the current problem
at hand is at least solved with this "workaround". Any ideas why this might
be occurring? Thanks again.

Mine is the same. So it must be Microsoft's problems. The Question is, how
will they solve it if we can't donwnload an update!

Brendel/Pa Bear...I too had this error 0x800C0008 last night for the first
time ever. I Googled and found several 'solutions', here:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/0x800c0005.htm and here:
http://cert.uni-stuttgart.de/archive.../msg00038.html Two
changes made Windows Update work last night: 1. Using https:// or 2.
Deselecting 'Check for publisher's certificate revocation' and 'Check for
server certificate revocation (requires restart)...both in Internet
Properties/Advanced/Security. Very oddly, I decided to RE-select the two
'Security' items this morning and reboot...guess what? Even without the
https:// Windows Update now scans with *no error*. Now that makes no sense
at all. But, I'll take it. 'mo'
