Am trying to install office xp update sp3 and am unable to because of above
error

I am told that the feature I am trying to use is a network resource that is
unavailable, press ok to try again, or enter alternative path to folder
containing installation package "PROPLUS.MSI

The message suggests (possibly erroneously) that your Office XP was
originally installed from a network connection, rather than directly from a
CD-ROM. The updater needs to connect to the original installation files.

What you should do is insert your Office XP Professional plus FrontPage
CD-ROM into your CD drive. When the message comes up, re-navigate to the
root fo your CD-ROM, which should contain the required PROPLUS.MSI file.

Am having a similar program, only my error message comes up every time I
start up my computer, and has been doing same when I insert my Windows XP
disk and try to reinstall or repair. Message says, in a nutshell: "The
feature you are trying to use is not available... Insert Microsoft Office XP
disk and click OK," which I do, but eventually am blockaded by the missing
PROPLUS.MSI file.

Could be that the computer is looking for Microsoft XP w/Front Page, while
my reinstallation disk is for "Microsoft XP Home Edition Including Service
Pack 2."

Can someone please help? (By the way, why isn't Microsoft answering its own
help-mail??? Is there some "Microsoft Email Help" button I'm missing, or
can't they afford to pay customer/technical support reps?)

thanks,
N.Santos

You receive an “Error 1706. Setup cannot find the required files,” error message :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298021/en-us

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down
to Item No. 171 (right column) and click on "Office XP 1706 - ProPlus.MSI Fix".

proplus.msi
On the Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage Edition

Read:
Office Update offers updates for Office programs that you do not have installed
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830335/

When you visit the Microsoft Office Online Web site to scan for updates for your Microsoft
Office programs, Office Update may offer updates to programs that you do not have
installed on your computer. Or, you may be prompted to insert the CD for an earlier
version of Microsoft Office.

For example, you may be offered updates for Office 2003 as an upgrade over Microsoft
Office XP Pro. Or, you may be prompted to provide the Office XP CD so that the Setup
program can access the ProPlus.msi file.

Did you upgrade from one version of Office to another?
