Error 0x80244018 on Windows Server 2003 R2

Problem: Cannot download patches from windows update or microsoft update.
Newly built 2003 R2 Server, is a blade in a Dell Blade chassis.
No proxy server present.

Thinking it has something to do with the blade chassis and the embedded
switch.. but can't seem to narrow it down.

I can't even download the patches, they fail to download. So I can't
install them manually. We have over 30 servers, a mix of 2k3, R2 and 2K. No
other servers seem to have a problem right now.

any thoughts?

I had the same issue and was able to resolve it by performing the following:

1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Go to Tools > Internet Options
3. Click on the 'Connections' tab
4. Click 'LAN settings' button
5. Ensure 'Automatically detect settings' is unchecked and you have a valid proxy script or server.

After that it was all good!
