I recently formatted my HD and reinstalled windows everything went ok but
when I tried to run windows update I got the above error message. I have an
older version of XP that doesn't have sp1 or 2 integrated in it. I have
browsed around and tried to start the BITS transfer service using
services.msc in the start>run says it's disabled and won't enable saying to
refer to service specific code
2147024846. I have tried a lot of the fixes for other people on these forms
but none have worked I also can't start regsvr32 qmgr.dll this was
something to start as part of a fix I read on another post. says the
DLLregisterserver entry point cannot be found. Any help is appreciated

Hi,

try the following;

Step 1: Register the related BITS key in the Register
=======================================

1. Click the Start menu -> Run. In the Open field, type "services.msc"
(Without
quotation marks). Click OK.

2. In the service list, double-click the BITS service to open it.

3. Click Start. Set the Startup type to Automatic.

4. Click OK.

After above steps, go to the Windows Update website and check if the problem
still
exists . If the issue persists, go on with Step 2.
Step 2: Restart the BITS and AU services
==================================

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click switch to a Classic View in left panel.
3. Double-click Administrative Tools.
4. Double-Click Services.
5. Double-click the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account"
is
selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is
unchecked.
4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If
not,
please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic"
or
"Manual". Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to
start the
service.
6. Please repeat the above steps with another service:

Automatic Updates

Step 3: Register related Dll
======================
1. Click Start, click Run, type Regsvr32 qmgr.dll in the Open box, and
then
click OK.
2. Click OK.
3. Click Start, click Run, type Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll in the Open box,
and then
click OK.
4. Click OK.
5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd and press Enter.

In the Command Prompt window, input the following command. Press Enter after
each
command.

Net stop bits (If you receive any error message here, we can safely
ignore)

6. Click Start, click Run, in the Command Prompt window, and input the
following
commands. Press Enter after each command.

%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader

7. In the open window, delete all files in the open folder directory.

8. Click Start, click Run, type cmd and press Enter.

In the Command Prompt window, input the following command. Press Enter after
each
command.

Net start bits

Note: You can copy each command and right click the command prompt window,
select
paste and press Enter to Run.

Click Start, select Run and type in: services.msc
Click OK

Right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service and select Properties.
Click on Log On tab.
In Hardware Profile field (located at the bottom), see if the Service status is Disabled for your
Hardware Profile.
If it is click to highlight the Hardware Profile in this field, then click on the Enable button and
then click on Apply.
Now, click on General tab and click on Start under Service Status.
