Error 0X80246008 XP Home SP2

Hi. I am using Microsoft Update on a XP Home SP2 computer. It is patched
with all critical and recommended updates up to and including September
2005. It is regularly scanned for malware by using the latest AV and
Spyware programs. Microsoft Update recognises the presence of the October
2005 critical updates but these are not downloaded by either the express or
the custom methods. After a short time with no activity the download fails
with error 0x80246008. sfc /scannow reports no problems with windows file
protection. The Update Faq is not of much help. Windows Update is set to
download and notify me. Can anyone please put me out of my misery and tell
me how to fix this annoying problem. Thank you in advance. Please address
