Stop the update service: Start > Run > type in
netstop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
If BITS [Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to Automatic
on startup, then you'll have to Stop that, too
netstop bits

Using Windows Explorer [ Start > (All) Programs > Accessories ] navigate
to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and move DataStore.edb to the
Recycle bin for now.
Restart the system and see if it can update now.
IF not, what is the installed antivirus/security suite/antimalware
programs ?
