Error 0x80248008

Using WinXP SP3 and noticed a few days ago that Microsoft Update website does
not work and throws this error. Office Update website does work. Lst Auto
Update appears to have run on 11/26 and was the update to Windows Updater.

Any ideas?

Stop the update service: Start > Run > type in

netstop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter
If BITS [Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to Automatic
on startup, then you'll have to Stop that, too

netstop bits

[If Run is not on the Start Menu then *right click* My Computer on the
Desktop or Start Menu and choose Manage.
Open Service and Applications; then Services
Scroll to and then double click on Update Services
Click the Stop button
Stop BITS if it's running, too]

Using Windows Explorer [ Start > (All) Programs > Accessories ] navigate
to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore and move DataStore.edb to the
Recycle bin for now.
Restart the system and see if it can update now.

IF not, what is the installed antivirus/security suite/antimalware
programs ?
Is a 3rd party firewall being used ?

After I did this, I got the error 0x80072EE2. I searched that and did both
resolutions (adding to trusted sites in Windows Firewall and Kaspersky
Anti-virus). Microsoft Update is running the green bar but never finishing
now.

Opps. it went to Error 0x80244022. Server not available?????

If the behavior persists a few hours from now (or tomorrow), there's a very
strong possibility that the problem is due to a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

Well, my anti virus died and I uninstalled it and tried Microsoft Update...no
green bar but after a long time, it worked itself through and told me there
were no high priority updates. I tried Custom and got the Error number:
0x80072EE2 again.

Plan to reinstall the anti-virus. I'll let you know what happens.

I am running One Care as I write. However, I scanned my computer earlier
today and it was fine. BTW, when I tired to reload my Kaspersky anti-virus I
got an error message about a corrupt file in the installer so I am now
without anti-virus. Ouch!

Ah well, last time I looked, the Update website was still working. Trade one
problem for another.

0x80072EE2 ERROR_INTERNET_TIMEOUT
That error combined with 0x80244022 can signify the servers are busy or
that the update files on the system haven't installed/registered properly.
IF no malware is detected by the OneCare scanner we'll reinstall the
Windows Update Agent [WUA] and get it registered properly, MJ.
BUT, Kaspersky being corrupted is usually a sign that malware is likely
present.
