FYI: If you have a legal copy of Windows, Microsoft offers free support for Windows Updates. It is e-mail support but you can find a link to it on the Windows Update website (windowsupdate.microsoft.com). They are very responsive.

Just to clarify my prior comment, you are entitled to two free support requests with Microsoft. After that, they are $59 apiece.

I have been getting this same error message. I went to "Start>Run and typed
in "services.msc" to look at all services. My windows update service had
been stopped. When I tried to restart it, it would not. I noticed that the
executable file for the windows update was "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
-k netsvcs". When I went down the path, I found that I did not have this
file in the system. I am not sure if a repair of Windows will fix this
problem, or a reformat will be needed.

Nice try but it looks if you may have been searching for that whole string?
The program name is svchost.exe. The other stuff after it is called
a command-line switch, which in this case is used to specify the account
the program is to be run under. Open Task Manager's Processes tab
(e.g. press Ctrl-Shift-Esc) and check Show processes from all users
and you will probably see several instances of it running under various
User Name(s).

Probably not necessary. Usually you just need to re-register some key .dll
and do some other minor maintenance in the SoftwareDistribution folder.
E.g. here is an example of a resolution involving your code, which you can find
using the search tool in the web interface to newsgroups that you are using.
This particular example is found using the results filter (Show: field)
but be aware that this is unusual because useful posts are only rated
infrequently by posters using that service.

(Alt-7 search for
0x8024D007 MVP
- filter on Answered Questions
)

Note that that resolution was appropriate for that case because of details
found in the poster's WindowsUpdate.log. Look in *your* log for more
specific clues from *your* case instead of just blindly trying it. Etc.
