Has anyone seen this error when trying to run Windows Update from Internet
Explorer? Anybody know of a fix? I found one hit on google, but it is in
Japanese, and the translation isn't much help. There are no hits on this
error in the MS KB or MSDN KB.

The system is xp home, pre-sp1. It has been cleaned of scumware and one
virus has been removed (a trojan). Subsquent scans by Trend Micro and Norton
show no further infection. (I do this for a living, so I don't need
instructions/advice on how to remove scumware, thanks!).

When trying to run Windows Update, instead of displaying the main update
page, it sits there for a while with the hourglass before going to the url
http://v5.windowsupdate.com/v5consumer/default.aspx and displaying a "we're
sorry" page with error 0x8ddd0001, and text explaining that activex scripting
and controls are required and gives some required settings for IE. I have
verified that IE is correctly configured per the recommendations on the
page., which are mostly defaults anyways.

Things I have already tried that did not fix the problem: sfc /scannow,
in-place repair reinstall of xp, forced reinstall of IE6 SP1 (after setting
IE HKLM\software\microsoft\activesetup\installed components = 0).

Any ideas?

Try the Windows Update Checklist:

Please post back with what resolved your issue.

I haven't gone through everything in the checklist, but after logging on with
a second admin account (newly created) I no longer get the error when trying
to run windows update, and it seems to work. Can you narrow down the likely
cause so I don't have to try all 26 steps?

Just to clarify my previous post, when I logged on using the newly-created
admin type account, I no longer got the 0x8ddd0001 error when trying to run
windows update from within IE. If I logged off and logged back on with the
old admin type account (original user account on the machine) I got the
error. It now works on the original account, but I had tried several things
in the meantime, so I'm not sure what the fix was.

I went through most of the windows update checklist that you provided (which
needs to be updated). The thing that finally seemed to make the difference
was running IE sp1 repair from control panel add/remove.

The system still isn't updating correctly, but I have another thread started
on that (search for update.exe cpu).
