I have had a problem with windows update for about a month now. I keep
receiving an error: 0x8e5e0442 on every single update. I've been googling,
but I haven't found anything useful.

I have talked with Microsoft's support center and the most I learned from
them is that a virus is not the culprit.

I have tried reinstalling the WindowsUpdateAgent to no avail.

I am running Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate, Core 2 Extreme 3GHz, 4GB RAM,
2TB HDD space.

From the WindowsUpdate.log file, here is some of the output I get:

Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot, AVG
Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before attempting
to install the update(s). If you disable a third-party firewall, do NOT
connect to the internet without having the Windows Firewall enabled!

More importantly what would be useful for you to disclose to us is:
what did they ask you?

FWIW I think your earlier code 0x80070002 may be significant
and there is a standard procedure for dealing with it.

Also, your log refers to CBS so I suspect you could find more detail
in that log.

More generally, if the diagnostics you do find are not sufficient,
and if even invoking the associated verbose mode logging is equally
unilluminating, I suggest you supplement all types of logging by
running ProcMon.

Good luck
