Did you recall manually renaming/deleting any file within
%windir%\softwaredistribution? Or was there any recent power interruption?

I don't know if the server was powered off abruptly. I also didn't delete any
files from the mentioned folder. I also bypassed windows updates and tried to
load SP2 from a CD rom and got a weird message about cryptogrhic service is
not on, but oit was on
